Buttery, festive, and fun to make, these classic Spritz Cookies are a holiday baking favorite. Almond extract gives the cookies their signature flavor, while a cookie press creates beautiful shapes with the design baked right into each cookie. Add sprinkles, colorful sugar, or frosting for an easy Christmas cookie that’s perfect for cookie trays, parties, and gifting.
Ingredients
- 1 cup butter, softened
- 2/3 cup sugar
- 1 egg, slightly beaten
- 2 1/4 cups flour
- 1/2 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp almond extract
- Optional: food coloring, sprinkles, frosting
Directions
Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Using a stand mixer, cream butter until smooth. Add sugar and egg and mix until fully combined. Add flour, baking powder and almond extract and mix until a dough forms. Add food coloring, if desired. Roll dough into a log and chill for 30 minutes. If dough is too soft to handle, chill slightly longer. Chill a bare metal cookie sheet in the refrigerator before using. Do not grease the cookie sheet or use a nonstick pan or silicone baking mat.
When ready to bake, select the desired design for your cookie press. Place chilled dough into the cookie press and press cookies directly onto the chilled, ungreased baking sheet. If desired, add sprinkles or other decorations before baking. Bake for 8–10 minutes or until golden brown. Transfer cookies to a cooling rack and cool completely before adding frosting or additional decorations. Makes approximately 5 dozen cookies.
Tips for Using a Cookie Press for Spritz Cookies
For best results, start with chilled dough and a chilled, ungreased bare metal baking sheet. Avoid using nonstick baking sheets, silicone baking mats, or greasing the pan.
Chill the dough before pressing. Roll the prepared dough into a log and refrigerate for 30 minutes. If the dough is still too soft to handle, chill it longer before loading your cookie press.
Chill your baking sheet, too. Place a bare metal cookie sheet in the refrigerator before using.
Choose your design before adding the dough. Select the desired shape on your cookie press, then load the chilled dough according to your cookie press instructions.
Press directly onto the baking sheet. Hold the cookie press directly against the chilled baking sheet and press the dough onto the surface.
If the dough becomes too soft, chill it again. Warm dough can become more difficult to handle.
Decorate before baking. Add sprinkles or other bake-safe decorations after pressing the cookies, if desired. Food coloring can also be mixed into the dough for colorful holiday shapes.
Save frosting for after baking. Let the cookies cool completely before adding frosting or other finishing decorations.
For a festive Christmas cookie tray, use several cookie press designs and vary the sprinkles, colors, and decorations.
